2012 New Zealand Nationals and Secondary School Championships 7-8 July 2012
The Karate New Zealand National and Secondary School Championships were held 7-8 July in Porirua at the Te Rauparaha Arena. Karatedo Shitokai New Zealand had only three competitors this year, Zara and Yvette from Whangarei and Kieran from Palmerston North.
The Nationals are New Zealands best competitors and during the two days it included juniors and seniors and the NZ High school champs. However several members from the Senior team were away competing at the World University games in Slovakia, including our very own Nicky Roberts travelling with Sensei Bob.
Kieran unfortunately droped a crucial flag in his opening event 3-2 in the 16/17 Male Kata. In the +16 Seniors Mens Open Kata, Kieran still had a tough job ahead, with a draw that required him to having to perform four katas to make it into the finals. It was a good start with 4-1 in the first round. The second round, Kieran was up against last years winner, Kosei, who took that round. Kieran won the next round 5-0, but couldn't quite manage it in the forth round, missing a 3rd placing. It is much harder competition when faced with having to do four or more katas just to make it to medal selection, in a very tough event.
Zara, completed in the Womans 16-17 Kata, and later in the Kumite, narrowly missing by 2-1.
Our main success for the Nationals was young Yvette Hendrikse, her first National Competition and coming out with the Bronze Medal. No easy ride for Yvette either, being first up and winning 3-2. Second round 4-1. At this time, confusion over the allowed katas meant Yvette had to continue with the Heians as Premier and Development had been combined. This cause a number of coaches to quickly evaluate, (including myself) with Yvette losing the third round, but winning the forth 5-0 to secure the Bronze Medal. Well done Yvette.
Another big day and much better results for both Kieran and Zara. Kieran put in a very good Nipaipo in the first round, and later securing the Bronse Medal. Zara missed out on the kata, but later made up with it with a very good first round of Kumite 8-2 and putting a very good Jodan kick. Zara continued and finally finished the event with the Bronze medal.
Overall a successful weekend for Karatedo Shitokai New Zealand, three competitors and three medals.
