posted by Dukenukem on | under National Events2012 Central North Island Open Karate Championships - 17th June 2012 Karatedo Shitokai sent a small team of five competitors to the 2012 Central North Island Open Karate Championships, including three young 10 and 11 year olds, Olivia Crum, Yvette Hendrickse and Harrison Higgins, including Nicky Roberts, the 2011 Northland Sportswoman of the Year, and Zara Wech, the 2011 Northland Secondary Schools Sportswoman of the Year. Both Nicky and Zara competed very well, with Nicky, winning the Senior Women Kata most convincingly, and Zara winning Silver in the Junior Women -59kg Kumite. Nicky is traveling to Slovakia in early July as part of the NZ team for the World University Champs, and is in her final stages of preparation, which showed in her excellent Hamilton performance. However, the most satisfying part of the day was the performance of the three 10 and 11 competitors. Harrison Higgins, who was competing for the first time, performed very well to gain a silver medal in the boys 10/11 years Kata, and Yvette Hendrickse and Olivia Crum who were entering in their second competition, came first and second in the girls 10/11 years Kata. This reversed the result from their first competition earlier this year when Olivia won and Yvette coming second. All three children have been receiving extra coaching in preparation for competition and Yvette and Olivia in particular stood out from their competition in a large field of competitors. Both of these girls, and Harrison continue to impress with their dedication and determination to succeed, and all of them have shown huge improvements in their karate this year.
