2012 Shitokai New Zealand DAN Grading - Saturday 15th December 2012
Our now traditional Dan grading day was held on Saturday 15th December, and this year our organisation welcomed five new Shodans to our numbers. They are:
As usual it was a "full on” grading day for everyone with again, as is now usual, a big audience of supporters and families, plus non grading members curious to see what lies in store for them if they continue training.
The five new Shodans had put a lot extra time into preparation, both with their grading partner and also with me, as they honed their Kata and Kumite skills. Their Bunkai training made for some very good viewing, the audience showing their appreciation for some spectacular take downs and throws.
In the "spirit” section where they each had to demonstrate their staying power in the face of constantly changing fresh fighting opponents, all performed very well, although a couple of them were out on their feet at the end, but to their credit they held on well. One particular gradee had put a lot of time into "cross fit” training, but as I explained, cross fit is not hard fighting and constant contact which exhausts you in ways that cross fit does not. However, that particular gradee is now the proud holder of a new black belt, and says the pain was all worth it!
Finally, I must say that our organisation, although small by some standards, is growing rapidly, and there are several youngsters coming through the ranks who have the potential to become excellent Karateka. I would like to express my thanks to Murray Burns and Dave Nuku, who were a big help on the grading day. Both are part of "Karate Families” and are seeing their own children maturing into excellent Karateka, and fine young people, which is what Karate is all about.
Congratulations to all successful gradees, you really did earn your grades.
Also worth mentioning were the eight young (and not so young) members trying for 1st Kyu, which, with regular training, is 12 months away from Shodan. I am very happy to say that they all passed what was a demanding grading with flying colors. Everyone had put in some solid preparation, and all are looking good to try out for Shodan in December 2013, which means, if they all stay, a REALLY big grading day next year (in fact we will probably have to divide the day into two, on consecutive weekends).
