![]() 2011 Northland Sports Awards 7th October 2011 Northland Secondary Schools Sports Awards recently held in the Kensington stadium in Whangarei, Karatedo Shitokai New Zealand, Zara Wech was awarded the Supreme Female Award, the Northland Secondary Schools Sportswoman of the Year, to go with her Karate code award, and Matt Burns' Male Karate code award. This was a well deserved reward for all the hard work Zara has done this year, and is a recognition of her major performance, becoming the Commonwealth Junior Woman -48kg Kumite Champion in Sydney earlier in the year. To win this award in her first NCEA year is indeed outstanding, and follows a proud Karatedo Shitokai tradition, with Travis Butler, Kayla Neho, Nicky Roberts, all Karatedo Shitokai club members having won this award in the past few years (Nicky won it in 2010 in her last year at school). Zara, who also follows the club tradition of being most humble about her success, will, I am sure, continue to succeed in future years, just watch this space!
