This year Shitokai New Zealand again travelled to New Caledonia, to compete in the New Caledonian Open tournament, held in Noumea on Saturday 11th June. It was also an opportunity to teach and train with our sister club in Noumea, and share some of Hasegawa Sensei’s latest teaching with our sister club.

In all we attended four club sessions, (Friday evening, Saturday morning, all day Sunday and Monday morning), working with different age and ability levels. It was great to see the enthusiasm shown by all the club students, and we were able to show the Dan grades another new kata, Matsumura Bassai. We also covered the Shitoryu system of the five different types of defence, which again was enthusiastically accepted by all members.

On the Saturday afternoon, our two students who accompanied me, Nicky Roberts and Zara Wech, competed in the New Caledonian Open, which started at 2pm and continued through until about 8pm. Both Nicky and Zara won Gold. Nicky was especially impressive in the Senior Women Kata, not losing a flag during the entire event.

Hasegawa’s recent advanced teaching has had a big effect on Nicky, who is looking very strong and fast. Zara won Gold in the Junior Women Kumite, but also competed in the senior Women Kata, which was an excellent learning curve for her. I must also pay a big compliment to Alicia Bezier from our sister club, who earlier this year came 3rd in the French Open Junior Women Kata, and also won three gold medals at the Australian Open. Alicia is a quick learner and a dedicated trainer, and is a much improved karateka from last time I saw her. Alicia will hopefully be coming to Whangarei in January 2012 to study English at Northland Polytecnic, staying with Nicky and training at our honbu dojo. We look forward to this happening.

Finally, I must pay tribute to the generosity and hospitality of the New Caledonian Karate Federation, who installed us at an excellent hotel in Noumea, provided meal money and generally could not have been more helpful and friendly. Combine this with the incredible kindness shown to us once again by our sister club and its members (all transport provided, dinners at member’s homes- the dinner at the Bezier’s home was once again just superb), and the great weather in New Caledonia (even though it rained on the monday, at least the rain is warm!), made the entire experience for Nicky, Zara and myself most enjoyable, and I might add, the warm temperatures make hard training much more enjoyable for oldies like me!

So, merci beaucoup to all our friends in Noumea, our relationship is becoming even more special, and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.
