2010 Northland Open Championships - 7th March 2010

This year our club organised and the Northland Open Karate Champs. The competition attracted over 90 entries from Auckland and Hamilton (many many thanks to all the clubs who supported us, especially WadoKai, Jyoshinmon & SKANZ), with 15 from Shitokai New Zealand.

As far as our club is concerned, we had a most successful day results wise with many younger competitors entering for the first. Overall the club won 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze medals.

The result for Shitokai New Zealand were as follows:

Nicky Roberts; Gold Senior Women Kata, Silver Junior Women Kata. Nicky is looking tremendous, all the explosive power training is beginning to show in her Karate. The only hiccup was an unusual & uncharacteristic slip in Junior Women Kata, costing her the gold. However, she was superb in Senior Women Kata, defeating her closest rival again in the final.

Matthew Baird: Gold Senior Men Kata. Matthew is now competing as a Senior, & put on an excellent performance for his win.

Zara Wech: Gold 14/15 years female kata. Again, Zara is now beginning to show all the hard training she has been doing, & the NZ Open will be interesting.

Matt Burns: Gold Junior Men -68kg Kumite, bronze in Junior men kata. Matt & his brother Daniel have been doing a lot of extra training with James Halilovich, with both of the trying for Oceania representation in september this year.

Joseph Faithfull: Gold 12/13 years male development kata. Joseph continues his steady improvement in his Karate and is competing at the NZ Open in April.

Daniel Burns: Silver Cadet Male +70kg kumite

Joshua Kenyon: Silver 6/7 years male kumite.

Shaolin Leefe: Bronze 8/9 years male kata

Courtney Herlihy: Bronze Female Cadet Kumite

Aaron Springford: Bronze Junior Male Kata.
