2013 Self Defence Seminar, Whangarei - Saturday 20th April 2013
Shitokai New Zealand, in conjunction with Sensei’s Henry Heta and Tim Baxter, held a one day self defence seminar, at Sensei Tim’s Dojo in Whangarei. The seminar was well attended by all three clubs and was restricted to Senior members of each club.
This seminar was the first of what will hopefully be an ongoing exchange of ideas. The group was set up in late 2012, when Karate New Zealand would not let Karate Northland reform without, in the group’s mind, very restrictive conditions, so the group (all members of the original Karate Northland) formed a loose alliance with events like this in mind.
As this was a self defence seminar all attendees wore street clothes. The day was extremely interesting, and I for one (Sensei Bob Dalton) found the exchange of ideas invaluable, and gave me a heck of a lot to think about. Both Sensei Henry Heta and Sensei Tim Baxter have years of experience, with Sensei Henry having had lots of "hands on” experience in real situations.
Sensei Tim brought all his experience in Tai Chi and the Chinese Martial Arts to the seminar and believe me, anyone who doubted his ability in those fields were soon put in their place!
The seminar covered aspects, from simple "escape from situations” to "full on knife and weapon defence" and it was great to have different people attack, taking all of us outside our comfort zones. It was just as well they were dummy knives, or lots of us would be requiring first aid!
Sensei Henry’s use of a simple trouser belt in knife and club attacks was most illuminating, showing his years of real experience in these types of situations, and Sensei Tim’s experience in use of pressure points has opened up a whole new world to most of us.
Much advice by all three instructors was given, including awareness zones and situation reading, and the first rule of self defence, "the best defence is not being there” was pushed continually. However, Sensei Henry’s "four F’s” rule was well absorbed (cannot be printed here, but those attending know it well!).
Finally, once again, a big thank you to both Sensei Tim and Henry, for your time and sharing of knowledge, a great day.
