2015 Auckland and Secondary Schools Champs - Sunday 14th June 2015

On Sunday 14th June a small team from Shitokai New Zealandi attended the Auckland Champs and the Auckland and Northland Secondary Schools.

It was held at the AMI Netball centre, a superb venue and a well run event by Auckland Karate.  It was another learning curve for our competitors, particularly in fighting.  The more time on the mat the bigger the improvement.

Jacob Wood did not medal on the day, but an opponent that beat Jacob 7-1 in the champs, Jacob drew with 2-2 in the Secondary Tournament.  Jacob is improving with every outing.

Cameron Evans was our busiest competitor with four events, finishing with two silvers and a bronze.  Cameron certainly doesn’t lack heart; his ability is improving to match it.

Nick Foulkes competed in the Secondary schools only, representing his school in both Kata and Kumite.  Nick got silver in Kata and a bronze in Kumite, a good return for your effort Nick.

Holly Weber had three events, one Kata and two Kumite events.  Her Kata continues to improve but it was her fighting that lifted to a new level winning bronze in the Secondary schools event.  It could have easily been silver.

Olivia Crum had to take on two Oceania champs in her two events.  First the champs that are the two best where seeded on the same side of the draw.  Olivia had to settle for bronze but in a better draw it would have been silver. In the Secondary schools she did one better with silver.  Olivia’s Kata continues to improve.

Yvette Hendrikse had a good day on the mat, losing the Secondary schools to the current Oceania champ but getting silver.  In the 12-13 year champs she won gold, well done Yvette.

Both Yvette and Olivia are Bob’s students so both have excellent kihon and with the extra training with Matthew and Nicky plus their own extra training are continuing to improve.

Special thanks to all the parents who came, it was a long day especially for Cameron and Yvette’s parents.  Special thanks to Dean Weber for sitting in on some of the fights for me.
