Dylan Murdie was our only representative and a first time in competition. Dylan has only been training with us for 3 months and had only three weeks to add Heian Shodan as an addition Kata with extra training sessions. With a good size field, Dylan needed three katas to get him to the finals, winning the first two rounds with Heian Nidan, then Shodan. Making it to the finals with a repeat of Heian Nidan, it started off strong but on the finishing set of moves Dylan mixed up the moves which threw him completely off, causing him to lose the round and settling for Silver placing. It would have been interesting if Dylan hadn't made the critical mistake as I think he would have had a good chance of winning the Development division. Although disappointing, it is better to make a mistake now than later on in his karate career when the stakes are much higher and a basic mistake on the day can often mean the difference
between a Gold or Silver. Overall, taking second place is still a very good result for Karatedo Shitokai New Zealand. ![]() 2017 Manawatu Open ![]() Dylan Murdie - Heian Nidan ![]() Dylan Murdie, Second in Male Development Kata | Karatedo Shitokai New Zealand
