This year Dave Nuku and Kieran Nuku competed in the Kata division with Dave taking 3rd for Senior Mens Premier Open and Kieran taking second for the 13 - 17 year Male Premier. Nicky Roberts competed for New Zealand in the World Under 21 Karate Championships in Melaka, Malaysia and had an excellent record. She reached the quarter finals in the Women's Kata event, becoming the first NZ woman to ever reach a kata quarter final at a World Championship.

The NZ team, the biggest ever to attend an International tournament, enjoyed great success in Sydney over the weekend of 29-31st July. These Commonwealth Karate Championships were by far the best attended championships ever, and the NZ team performed superbly, leading the gold medal and the overall medal tally. The Sugihara Cup is always a huge event, attracting a lot of local and international competitors alike. The 2011 Nationals were soon upon us where Karate Do Shitokai New Zealand once again completed, although smaller in number than previous years. In total we had 6 competitors; from our Honbu dojo (Nicky Roberts, Matthew Baird and Zara Wech), the Kamo dojo (Matt Burns) and from the Palmerston North dojo (Dave and Kieran Nuku).

Once again Karatedo Shitokai New Zealand is very fortunate to have Hasegawa Sensei visit Whangarei over Easter and the week that followed, to teach our students. Hasegawa Sensei focused on the clubs top students, Nicky and Matthew.

Alicia Bezier from our sister club in New Caledonia, ASSOCIATION SHITORYU KARATEDO NOUVELLE CALEDONIE, has had some great success at the 2011 French Open Karate Championships. Alicia came 3rd in the Junior Women Kata, (16/17yrs) in a big field of 54 competitors. This is not Alicia's first French Open success, as last year she also came 3rd in the cadet division (14/15 yrs).
